NATO Ships Hold Live Fire Drill in the Black Sea

NATO naval ships held a joint exercise in the Black Sea with the Romanian navy as part of the alliance’s collective security program in the region.

Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander James Stavridis said the alliance will continue to operate in the Black Sea despite tensions with Russia.

NATO to Stay in Black Sea Despite Tensions With Russia - Former Commander
NATO warships assigned to Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) conducted, jointly with Romanian naval ships a series of live fire drills in the Black Sea, the alliance’s naval command said in a statement Wednesday.
Taking part in the drill were the flagships USS Vicksburg (from the United States), HMCS Fredericton (from Canada), TCG Turgutreis (from Turkey), FGS Spessart (from Germany), ITS Aliseo (from Italy), and ROS Regina Maria (from Romania).
“Some units conducted live artillery fire exercises, while other practiced, together with Romanian Air Force MiG 21s, measures to repel a simulated enemy attack from the air,” the statement added.
The ships also practiced basic ship handling maneuvers and engaged in a simulated battle with ground-based “enemy” units.
The Romanian naval group also included  the frigate Maraseti, a minesweeper and two corvettes.
