Iranian Army rejects media claims on US warplanes intrusion

An Iranian Army commander has rejected media claims that several US warplanes have intruded into the Islamic Republic’s airspace.

“These [reports] are psychological operations, and they are trying to cover their latest weaknesses by disseminating unconfirmed and false news,” Deputy Chief of the Army for Coordination Brigadier General Mohammad Hossein Dadras said on Tuesday.

Some media reports recently claimed that several US warplanes, taking off from American bases in Germany, intruded into the Islamic Republic’s airspace before landing in Iraq.

In early November, Iran’s military repelled an unidentified aircraft that had entered the country’s airspace “above the territorial waters of the Islamic Republic in the Persian Gulf.”

The Pentagon claimed two Iranian warplanes had fired at a US drone as it conducted a routine, but classified, surveillance mission over the Persian Gulf about 16 nautical miles off the Iranian coast.

On November 23, 2012, Iran’s Ambassador to UN Mohammad Khazaei submitted two letters to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council, complaining against the repeated violations of the country’s airspace by US drones and the illegal moves of US Navy warships in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

On December 4, 2011, the Iranian Army's electronic warfare unit downed an RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone after it crossed into Iran's airspace over the border with neighboring Afghanistan.
