As a rare and portentous total solar eclipse approaches the North American continent on Monday, heaven-watchers the world over will hold their breath in anticipation of a divine event written in the skies and reflected in the world of men. The event signals the beginning of the month of Elul, the last month of the Hebrew year, and the start of the days of repentance. Jews the world over will prepare to face their Maker on the upcoming holy days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur as the momentous year 5777 draws to a close.

This Hebrew calendar year was full of signs from above: from eclipses to comets, from the birth of new stars to the discovery of new planets, the heavens drew aside the divine veil to reveal that God’s control of the universe is eternal and abiding. Many religious leaders and respected Jewish thinkers understood these rare and exciting events to correspond to ancient texts, prophecies and portents of the world to come.

On the eve of the highly-anticipated solar eclipse, Breaking Israel News took a look back at the biggest astronomical events of the year and what they mean for the Jewish people and the nations.

1. 100-Year-Old Jewish Prophecy Predicts Solar Eclipse Portends Destruction of North Korea

In one of the biggest stories of the year, Breaking Israel News discovered a prophetic connection between the upcoming total solar eclipse, traversing North America on August 21, and the rise of tensions between the US and North Korea by bringing to light a 100-year-old prophecy foretelling that a solar eclipse occurring in the beginning of the Hebrew month of Elul will bring with it suffering for the “Kings of the East”. Also in February, three astronomical events converged on a Shabbat which also happened to be a Jewish holiday, Tu B’Shvat, an arboreal celebration of the changing seasons. A penumbra lunar eclipse, the “snow moon” – a full moon in February – and the passing of a comet all appeared in the skies within a few hours of each other. Israeli amateur astronomer Ira Machefsky pointed out that Tu B’Shvat is a holiday with particular astrological significance, as it marks the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

The latest escalation in the deteriorating diplomatic relations between the US and Russia

The latest escalation in the deteriorating diplomatic relations between the US and Russia was unveiled this morning, when the US embassy in Russia announced it was scaling back its visa services in Russia after Moscow ordered it to sharply cut its diplomatic staff in retaliation over new U.S. sanctions, and would suspend all non-immigrant visa operations in Russia starting August 23, although visa operations will be resumed on September 1, but only in the main embassy building in Moscow. 

As disclosed in the US embassy statement, "as a result of the Russian government’s personnel cap imposed on the U.S. Mission, all nonimmigrant visa (NIV) operations across Russia will be suspended beginning August 23, 2017.  Visa operations will resume on a greatly reduced scale.  Beginning September 1, nonimmigrant visa interviews will be conducted only at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.... As of 0900 Moscow time Monday, August 21, the U.S. Mission will begin canceling current nonimmigrant visa appointments countrywide. 

The greatly reduced US mission in Russia also said that "the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and three consulates will continue to provide emergency and routine services to American citizens, although hours may change."

"Capacity for interviews in the future will be greatly reduced because we have had to greatly reduce our staffing levels to comply with the Russian government’s requirement," the embassy told applicants in a note on its web site. 

While previously Russian citizens could apply for tourist visas in local US consulates in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok, today's announcement ends this practice, forcing applicants to go to the Russian capital: "NIV interviews at the U.S. Consulates in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, and Vladivostok are suspended until further notice... The staffing changes will also affect the scheduling of some immigrant visa applicants.  Affected applicants will be contacted if there is a change as to the time and date of their interview."

The move, which will further sour already battered U.S.-Russia relations, means Russian citizens wanting to visit the United States for tourism will no longer be able to apply via U.S. consulates outside Moscow and will have to travel to the Russian capital instead. 

The action comes on the heels of Moscow’s order to cut the American diplomatic corps by 755 people and bring it to the numbers equivalent to Russian diplomatic staff in the US, which is 455 people. To meet the deadline of the Russia’s order, which expires on September 1, the US diplomatic mission has already begun “planning for departures and staff reductions.”

The US embassy in Moscow also condemned Moscow’s decision on the diplomatic staff reduction, saying that it casts doubt on the will to improve the bilateral relations. “Russia’s decision to reduce the United States’ diplomatic presence here calls into question Russia’s seriousness about pursuing better relations,” the embassy statement said.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said earlier this month that the United States had issued around 150,000 visas to Russian citizens last year. The U.S. embassy signaled its new scaled back visa regime could be in place for some time. "We will operate at reduced capacity for as long as our staffing levels are reduced," it said. 

Shortly after the announcement, A Russian senator quoted by RIA news agency said that Russia will respond in kind to U.S. visa changes: "New U.S. visa rules for Russians are a demarche", RIA Novosti reported, citing member of Federation Council Andrey Klimov. 

Separately, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the US decision to scale back visa services in Russia was an attempt to stir up ill-feeling among ordinary Russians against the authorities. Lavrov, speaking at a joint news conference in Moscow with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, said that "the American authors of these decisions have come up with another attempt to stir up discontent among Russian citizens about the actions of the Russian authorities. It's a well known logic ... and this it the logic of those who organize color revolutions," Lavrov told reporters.

Lavrov, who said the decision suggested Washington didn't think its reduced diplomatic staff could adapt to new circumstances, said Russia would carefully study the U.S. decision and promised that Moscow would not take out its anger on ordinary U.S. citizens.

ISIS ‘Hit Squads’ Are Using The Refugee Program To Infiltrate Western Nations

I know that the headline sounds over the top, but this has actually been confirmed by German intelligence and by the mainstream media. ISIS terrorists have been using the refugee program to sneak into North America and Europe, and yet very little is being done to stop this from happening. One of the reasons why this hits so close to home for me is because leftists are pushing to bring a lot more Islamic refugees up here to north Idaho. Since our area has a low population density, a significant number of refugees could dramatically alter the character of our community very rapidly. Many moved up here in order to have a safe place to raise their families, but now the left seems determined to bring the danger of Islamic extremism to our local neighborhoods. 

Refugees typically have little or no paperwork, and it can be exceedingly difficult to tell a terrorist apart from a non-terrorist. German intelligence has discovered that ISIS has been using this confusion to smuggle “hit squads” and “sleeper cells” into Germany…

German intelligence services have evidence that “hit squads” from the Islamic State terror group have infiltrated the country disguised as refugees, the deputy head of Bavaria’s spy agency told the BBC Thursday.

“We have to accept that we have hit squads and sleeper cells in Germany,” Manfred Hauser, the vice president of the Bavaria region’s intelligence gathering agency, BayLfV, told the Today program.

“We have substantial reports that among the refugees there are hit squads. There are hundreds of these reports, some from refugees themselves. We are still following up on these, and we haven’t investigated all of them fully,” said Hauser.

German intelligence says that there are literally “hundreds” of reports of ISIS hit squads being among the refugees.

And CNN has reported that two of the Islamic extremists that were involved in the Paris attack last November entered Europe through the refugee program…

In the aftermath of the Paris attack in November, authorities revealed that two of the attackers — who blew themselves up outside the Stade de France — entered Europe through Greece using fake Syrian passports and posing as refugees. They were accompanied by two other alleged ISIS operatives who were held briefly by Greek authorities, released a month later, then re-arrested in the aftermath of the attack, as detailed by CNN.

Cases like this — and the arrests Tuesday in Germany — emphasize what is a difficult reality facing European law enforcement: ISIS has used migrant routes to ferry operatives into Europe, and some of those operatives may still be in hiding.

CNN is about as politically correct as you can get, and even they are admitting that this is a major problem.

In addition, a very large percentage of Islamic refugees hold deeply anti-Semitic views. According to the Jerusalem Post, one study found that more than half of all Muslim refugees have anti-Semitic attitudes…

“More than half of Muslim asylum seekers showed clear tendencies of an antisemitic attitude pattern,” wrote the authors of the 201-page study examined by The Jerusalem Post.

When asked by the investigators if “Jews have too much influence in the world,” 52% of Syrians said yes, while 53% of Iraqis agreed with the statement. Nearly 60% of Afghans said Jews wield too much influence, while a mere 5.4% of those from Eritrea – a Christian-majority country – held antisemitic views. Some Eritreans said they were familiar with Jews from the Bible.

Here in north Idaho, we have many wonderful Jewish people, and there is no place for that kind of hatred in our communities. Do we really want our Jewish neighbors to live in constant fear that they could be attacked?

And law enforcement personnel are often targets as well. For example, a 46-year-old Islamic refugee just tried to decapitate a police officer in Kennewick, Washington just a few days ago…

A 46-year-old Somali refugee identified as Hussein Hassan attacked a police officer in Kennewick, Washington, over the weekend with a large sword, striking at the officer’s head before he was shot and killed.

A spokesman for the police said two officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at 6:38 p.m. Sunday about a man walking down Olympia Street near 10th Avenue armed with a sword.

The two officers arrived on the scene at the same time in separate cars at about 6:40 p.m. One officer got out of his car to confront Hassan and police say the man started swinging the sword, striking the officer at least once in the head with the blade.

Both officers opened fire on the suspect and put him down.

And here in Idaho, nobody will be able to ever forget what happened in Twin Falls a while back. Three young Islamic refugees were arrested after they sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl…

Three boys, ages 14, 10, and 7, were charged in the case. The older boys, brothers, are from Eritrea, an African country, while the younger boy is from Iraq. The boys are from refugee families, but it is unclear how long they had been in the community.

What is known is that one of the boys touched the girl inappropriately inside the apartment complex’s laundry facilities. Another boy recorded the assault on a phone.

One boy pleaded guilty to felony exploitation of a child and misdemeanor battery. A second boy pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting felony lewd conduct and aiding and abetting misdemeanor battery. The third boy pleaded guilty to accessory to the commission of a felony.

So why would the left want to inflict this kind of pain on our communities?

Well, the real reason is because Muslims are five times more likely to vote for Democrats than they are for Republicans…

When it comes to political and social views, Muslims are far more likely to identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party (66%) than the Republican Party (13%) and to say they prefer a bigger government providing more services (67%) over a smaller government providing fewer services (25%). And about half of U.S. Muslims (52%) now say homosexuality should be accepted by society, up considerably from 2011 (39%) and 2007 (27%).

If I am elected to Congress, I am going to push for legislation that would allow local communities all over the United States to opt out of the refugee program.

Massive US-Korean Military Exercise Coinciding With Rare Solar Eclipse Could Spark War

On Monday, tens of thousands of US soldiers will simulate battles just south of the volatile border that separates North and South Korea, causing several world governments to worry that this huge multinational military exercise could inadvertently spark World War III. In a strange coincidence, the military maneuvers commence while a rare solar eclipse, prophesied as a bad omen for “kings of the east”, passes over America.

On Monday, the US will begin a large-scale ten-day multinational military exercise in South Korea named Ulchi-Freedom Guardian (UFG). Approximately 25,000 American service members will participate in the exercise, with about 2,500 coming in from off-peninsula. Forces from South Korea (ROK) will participate, as well as militaries from nine other countries: Australia, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Italy, Philippines, United Kingdom and New Zealand.

The US holds two major exercises annually in Korea focused on defending South Korea from the north: Foal Eagle and Key Resolve in March or April, and the UFG in August. These joint exercises have been held since the Korean War ended in a ceasefire in 1953 and have always been a point of contention, but this year, as tensions rise between the US and North Korea, the exercise has become a major source of concern.

Every year, the exercises trigger threats from North Korea, which sees them as acts of aggression, but the threats coming out of North Korea recently took on a decidedly bellicose tone. The state-run Korean Central News Agency published a report Monday quoting their supreme leader:

“[Kim Jong Un] said that if the planned fire of power demonstration is carried out as the US is going more reckless, it will be the most delightful historic moment when the Hwasong artillerymen will wring the windpipes of the Yankees and point daggers at their necks, underlining the need to be always ready for launching into action anytime our Party decides.”

The threat of escalation due to the military exercise is so serious that other nations have stepped in to encourage the US to cancel the exercise. Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said in a statement to the media last Friday that Moscow was deeply worried and considered the risk of military conflict between the US and North Korea “very high”. He suggested a plan under which North Korea would halt missile tests if the US and South Korea would cancel the military exercises.

The Russian suggestion has an unfortunate precedent. In 1992, Washington and South Korea suspended an annual exercise called Team Spirit as part of diplomatic efforts to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear program. North Korea later reneged on its agreements and the US resumed military exercises.

Objections to the exercises have also come out from China. “The drill will definitely provoke Pyongyang more, and Pyongyang is expected to make a more radical response. If South Korea really wants no war on the Korean Peninsula, it should try to stop this military exercise,” read an editorial in China’s Global Times.

The already-tense international situation began to heat up in the beginning of August when the US and the United Nations enacted harsh economic sanctions against North Korea in response to illegal nuclear tests and test flights of intercontinental ballistic missiles.



North Korea responded by running more tests, leading to a US warning in the form of two US B-1 bombers overflying the Korean Peninsula two weeks ago. North Korea responded by threatening Guam, where the US bombers were stationed, with nuclear retaliation.

Undaunted, President Donald Trump threatened North Korea with “fire and fury like the world has never seen”. He doubled down on Friday by saying that the US was “locked and loaded” to take on North Korea and that the rogue nation’s supreme leader, Kim Jong Un, would “regret it fast” if he attacked the US territory of Guam. Though the North Korean leader retracted his threat, spy satellite photos released four days ago revealed North Korean mobile missile launcher movement.

The fears that the upcoming military exercises may set off a real-world conflict are well-grounded. In March, in reaction to the Foal Eagle exercises, North Korea test-fired four ballistic missiles. This led to a Pentagon announcement that it was deploying a missile defense system known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense on the Korean Peninsula with the approval of the government in Seoul.

The commencement of the military exercise coincides with a rare solar eclipse that will traverse the entire United States. An esoteric Jewish book written in Safed (Tsfat) over a century ago warned that a solar eclipse on the eve of the Hebrew month of Elul, beginning Monday night, signals that the “kings of the east will suffer great destruction”. Rabbi Yosef Berger, rabbi of King David’s Tomb on Mount Zion, told Breaking Israel News that in light of current rising political and military tensions, he interprets this to mean Kim Jong Un is clearly the eastern leader referred to in this prophecy.
