Hong Kong protesters clash with police

Pro-democracy activists and police have clashed in Hong Kong, as thousands of people tried to surround government headquarters overnight.

Protesters fought police armed with pepper spray and batons on roads around the two-month-old protest camp in the Admiralty district.

Police say 45 people have been arrested and a number of officers have been injured.

It is some of the worst violence since the protests began in late September.

The protesters want the people of Hong Kong to be allowed to choose their leaders in the 2017 elections without interference from Beijing. The Chinese government has said it will allow universal suffrage, but will screen candidates for the chief executive post in advance.

Last week police and court bailiffs removed one of the major protest camps in the Mong Kok commercial district.

The unrest flared overnight, after student leaders of the protest movement called on supporters to converge on the offices of Chief Executive CY Leung, a short distance away from Connaught Road, the major road they have been occupying for two months.

Protesters, many wearing hard hats, moved into the area, carrying umbrellas - the symbol of their movement - and throwing missiles towards police.

ISIS Launches Attack From Turkey

Do you remember all those Turkish tanks that sat idly along the border with Syria as ISIS laid siege to the border town of Kobani? Well, now ISIS is launching attacks against Kobani from Turkey.

According to a report from the AP:

The Islamic State group launched an attack Saturday on the Syrian border town of Kobani from Turkey, a Kurdish official and activists said, although Turkey denied that the fighters had used its territory for the raid.

The assault began when a suicide bomber driving an armored vehicle detonated his explosives on the border crossing between Kobani and Turkey, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Nawaf Khalil, a spokesman for Syria’s powerful Kurdish Democratic Union Party.

The Islamic State group “used to attack the town from three sides,” Khalil said. “Today, they are attacking from four sides.”

Turkey, while previously backing the Syrian rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad in that country’s civil war, has been hesitant to aid them in Kobani because it fears that could stoke Kurdish ambitions for an independent state.

Like his American counterpart, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been known to lie. The notion that Turkey is not aiding Kurds in Kobani being about fears that Kurds would want an independent state are ludicrous. Even if there is any truth to it, Turkey is siding with ISIS by default, at a minimum.

In reality, it’s become increasingly obvious that Turkey is in league with ISIS:

Mustafa Bali, a Kobani-based activist, said by telephone that Islamic State group fighters have taken positions in the grain silos on the Turkish side of the border and from there are launching attacks toward the border crossing point. He added that the U.S.-led coalition launched an airstrike Saturday morning on the eastern side of the town.

“It is now clear that Turkey is openly cooperating with Daesh,” Bali said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State.

As western leaders remain in denial or complicit in Turkey’s collaboration with ISIS, the terrorist group is launching attacks against Kobani, Syria from Turkey.

Islamic State spreading into northern Africa

Pope prays at Sultanahmet Mosque in İstanbul

His head bowed and hands clasped in front of him, Pope Francis on Saturday stood in two minutes of silent prayer facing east inside one Istanbul's most important religious sites, as he shifted gears toward more religious affairs on the second leg of his three-day visit to the mainly Muslim nation.

Following in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI who visited Turkey in 2006, Francis prayed alongside the Grand Mufti of Istanbul, Rahmi Yaram, who had his palms turned toward the sky in a Muslim prayer inside the 17th-century Sultan Ahmet mosque.

"May God accept it," Yaram told the pope, at the end of the prayer aimed at showing respect for Islam and encouraging interfaith relations.
