Buffalo residents told to be ready to evacuate as two-metre snowfall melts
After a three-day onslaught that dumped a historic 2 metres of snow on the Buffalo area and killed at least 12 people, the sun came out, but so did predictions of flooding caused by rain and temperatures of up to 15C.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday warned residents of flood-prone areas around Buffalo to move valuables up from the basement, pack a bag and prepare to for the possibility of evacuation.
“It’s not water. It’s a toxic brew,” Gov. Cuomo said of flooding. “It has sewage in it, it has all sorts of runoff in it — and it does tremendous damage with anything that it hits.”
Weather Service meteorologist Jon Hitchcock said there might be trouble with drainage as snow and the uncollected autumn leaves underneath blocked catch basins.
“The biggest flood threat would be on Monday when temperatures are at their warmest,” he said. “There could be general urban flooding.”
The water tied up in the snowpack — roughly the equivalent of 15 centimetres of rain — could be released over the course of two days, said deputy Erie County executive Richard Tobe.
Tobe said flooding would likely affect mostly basements and creeks.
The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for Sunday to Wednesday.
