COLD WAR 2.0: SWEDEN PERMANENTLY DEPLOYS TROOPS TO STRATEGIC ISLAND

Sweden recently announced a contingent of 150 troops previously deployed to Gotland Island for a training exercise will remain there permanently.

Russia has called a move by Sweden to deploy a permanent contingent of troops on a strategic island in the Baltic Sea as inconsequential as “buckshot to an elephant.”

Swedish Armed Forces Supreme Commander Michael Byden, in comments to Swedish broadcaster SVT, claimed that “external factors in the world have deteriorated over time and it means I have made a decision about a permanent presence and that we put the battle group here earlier.”


Gotland Island, with a population of approximately 60,000 people, lies off the coast of Latvia. The historic island occupies a strategic location in the middle of the Baltic Sea.

Political analyst Igor Nikolaichuk suggested the deployment is a symbolic move with no effect on Russia’s defense capability.

Russian Scientist Says Newest Ice Age is Happening Now

A new study by a prominent Russian astrophysicist claims the “new Little Ice Age” started at the end of 2015 due to low solar activity, kicking off decades of “deep cooling” in the latter half of the 21st Century.

“As a result, the Earth has, and will continue to have, a negative average annual energy balance and a long-term adverse thermal condition,” Dr. Habibullo Abdussamatov, who is the head of space research for the Pulkovo Observatory at the Russian Academy of Sciences, wrote in a recent study.

“The quasi-centennial epoch of the new Little Ice Age has started at the end 2015 after the maximum phase of solar cycle 24,” Abdussamatov wrote. “The start of a solar grand minimum is anticipated in solar cycle 27 in 2043 and the beginning of phase of deep cooling in the new Little Ice Age in 2060.”

Abdussamatov’s latest work was translated into English and featured in a new book by geologist Don Easterbrook on evidence opposing the mainstream view that carbon dioxide is the main source of recent global warming.

Abdussamatov argues that declining solar activity will cause a gradual cooling over North America and Europe, which could recreate the conditions experienced during the “Little Ice Age” — cooler periods from Middle Ages to the mid-19th Century that coincided with a lull in sunspots.

“The gradual weakening of the Gulf Stream leads to stronger cooling in the zone of its action in western Europe and the eastern parts of the United States and Canada,” Abdussamatov wrote.

“Quasi-bicentennial cyclic variations of [total solar irradiance] together with successive very important influences of the causal feedback effects are the main fundamental causes of corresponding alterations in climate variation from warming to the Little Ice Age,” he wrote.

Abdussamatov previously predicted declining solar activity would lead to a new “Little Ice Age” in the next 30 years.

Italy's worst earthquake in 30 years has added to cracks in Rome's Colosseum, it has emerged.

Officials say the 6.6-magnitude tremor that struck in central Italy on Sunday morning had put extra strain on the capital's 2,000-year-old arena.

It comes as it emerged that a dormant volcano 12 miles south of the Eternal city may be reawakening after experts found signs of activity deep below the surface.

Scientists say magma has started building up about five miles below the surface prompting fears the Alban Hills is reactivating while the ground is reportedly rising by 3mm a year.

However, an eruption is not imminent and would not take place for about a thousand years, according to experts from the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology and La Sapienza University, the Telegraph reports.

The research, pubished on Geographical Research Letters, reconstructed the geological history of 600,000 years of the Alban Hills as they examined the 'cyclicality' of eruptions.

It comes as Rome continues to assess damage from one of the fiercest earthquakes in decades over the weekend.

The quake hit some 105 miles from the Italian capital in Norcia, in the country's Umbria region, early on Sunday morning - just two months another earthquake killed 300 people in the same region.

The earthquake was so powerful it is understood to have added fresh cracks to world famous landmarks in Rome, including the Colosseum.

An official involved in the Colosseum's upkeep said Sunday's tremor had put extra strain on the 2,000-year-old arena.

Two refugees fled for their lives from the right-wingers who screamed insults and threats after them.

Police were out in force at the time of the confrontation but apparently did not act until the refugees began to run from the mob who had gathered at the city’s Holzmarkt.

One of the asylum seekers was hit by a bicycle ridden by one of his pursuers and suffered a cut from a stone which hit him.

Police rescued a second youth and took him away in a patrol car.

The town has had a nightly curfew for unaccompanied minor refugees since the violent events of mid-September when nearly 80 neo-Nazis chased 19 asylum seekers through the streets after exchanging insults in a main square.

This time the far-right opponents of refugees took to cars and bikes to chase the migrants who told police they genuinely felt in fear of their lives.

Like in the previous incident, the confrontation escalated after both groups exchanged verbal insults.

The incident has highlighted once again the seething resentment that the far-right has for refugees who are spread out in accommodation centres across the country.

One week after the initial incident in Bautzen, neo-Nazi youths shouting 'foreigners out!' beat up an elderly man in the town.

The 72-year-old German citizen with Algerian roots was set upon by thugs who punched him to the ground.

They hurled racial epithets at him before fleeing and have so far not been caught.

In February, a cheering crowd was seen outside a burning asylum-seeker shelter in Bautzen, clapping and shouting: "Good, that's up in flames."

That same weekend, a video emerged of neo-Nazis intimidating refugee children, preventing them from getting off a bus to get to another shelter in Clausnitz.

Germany recorded more than 1,000 attacks on refugee shelters last year - a five-fold rise over 2014.

Bautzen mayor Alexander Ahrens met members of far-right groups in October in a bid to try to learn their motivation for violence.
