Three Who Made A War

The Spanish-American War was caused by three people: Teddy Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge, and William Randolph Hearst. The war, which killed a number of Spaniards and Americans, including some prominent Harvard “Swells,” was based entirely on lies and machinations of these three men and served no purpose other than their personal needs. Princeton University historian Evan Thomas calls these three monsters The War Lovers.

Hearst needed a war to build his newspaper circulation. Roosevelt needed a war to
sate his blood-lust and desire for military glory. Lodge needed a war to reinvigorate American manhood and to enlist American manhood in his “Large Policy” of American Empire. Between them, thanks to the ignorance and stupidity of the American people, they pulled it off.

Their adversary was Speaker of the House, Thomas Brackett Reed, “the Czar,” the most powerful politician in Washington. Reed, an honest and incorruptible politician, saw Lodge’s policy of “American exceptionalism” as naked imperialism that stood in total opposition and in great danger to American purposes. Reed saw Roosevelt’s war lust as a diversion of national purpose from the reconstruction of an economy that increasingly served a shrinking minority at the expense of the American people. But Hearst, Roosevelt, and Lodge made “peace” an epithet. The American people, whose gullibility is never-ending, were captivated by war-lust. Reed lost confidence in the American people whom he so well served. Reed could find no moral purpose in pushing the country toward war over nothing but fake news reports by “yellow journalism.”

Only a few years previously, Reed had had to halt the Cleveland administration from going to war with Great Britain over a British boundary dispute with Venezuela concerning mineral-rich land claimed by British Guyana. Somehow this boundary dispute, which had no more to do with US security than Honduras, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, Georgia, Ukraine, and the South China Sea have today, was seen as a “threat to US national security.”

Roosevelt and Lodge were ecstatic over the possibility of War with Great Britain. War was its own goal. Roosevelt wrote to Lodge: “I don’t care whether our sea coast cities are bombarded or not; we would take Canada.” Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, hard facts prevailed over American war lust. The American navy had 3 battleships. The British had 50. If only Washington had gone to war with Great Britain over a British boundary dispute with Venezuela. The total destruction of the American navy and coastal cities might have taught Americans a lesson and made the population less lustful for war and more suspicious of Washington’s war lies: the Gulf of Tonkin, Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction, Iranian nukes, Assad’s use of chemical weapons, Russian invasion of Crimea, etc.

Roosevelt and Lodge searched for a weaker adversary than the British navy and settled on Spain.

But how to bring about a war with a declining and tired 400-year old empire far removed from American interests?

Hearst, desperate to sell newspapers, knew what to do. He hired the artist, Frederic Remington, a painter and sculptor much worshipped by American conservatives today. Remington provided a drawing, filling half of the front page of Hearst’s New York Journal, of a comely nude young woman surrounded by sinister Spaniards. Hearst alleged that three lady passengers on the US mail steamer Olivette were strip-searched in the Harbor of Havana, Cuba, by leering Spanish males.

America had a rare moment of rational thought and philosophical reflection during the brief period of its Founding Fathers. Ever since America has been a country of pulp romances and court histories written as “chivalric derring-do.” Hearst asked where were the knightly American males who would rescue womankind from these indignities at the hands of cruel, wanton, Spaniards.

Hearst repeated the story with Evangelina Cisneros, “a beautiful young woman from the gentlest of families.” In Hearst’s story Evangelina went to the Island of Pines to beg for her elderly father’s release from the cruel Spaniards. As she resisted the sexual advances of the leering Spanish prison commander, she was thrown into a squalid prison for prostitutes.

Having created his heroine, Hearst rushed to rescue her. Hearst hired the son of a Confederate cavalry colonel, Karl Decker, to rescue the fair lady. Thousands of words were printed to describe Decker’s daring rescue, but what really happened is that Hearst bribed the Spanish guards to let her go from her comfortable hotel room. Having freed “one Cuban girl,” Hearst wanted to know “when shall we free Cuba.”

Teddy Roosevelt wanted to be the star of the event. Senator Lodge and the American newsman Richard Harding Davis made it so. Teddy charging up the hill, leading the Rough Riders, not urging from behind, defeated the Spanish all by himself and won the war.

What did it mean for the Cubans, a mixed and varied peoples, who had been fighting the Spanish for independence for years before self-righteous, self-serving Americans saw the opportunity to advance their interests and careers?

For Cubans, it meant swapping one master for another.

General William Shafter, the American in charge of the invasion force, declared: “Why these people [Cubans] are no more fit for self-government than gunpowder is for hell!” Calixto Garcia, who had been fighting for thirty years for Cuba’s liberation from Spain, was not allowed to be present when Spain surrendered Cuba. It was purely an American show devoid of the revolutionaries in whose name the war had been fought.

Roosevelt wrote home that the Cubans had fought badly and were not responsible for their liberation from Spain. It was Teddy and his Rough Riders who brought freedom to Cuba. The Teller Amendment passed by Congress in 1898 guaranteeing independence to Cuba was superseded by the Platt Amendment of 1901. The Platt Amendment gave Washington the right to intervene in Cuba whenever Washington pleased.

It finally dawned on Cubans that “civilization,” a word used by Americans, meant “denying the darker races the power to govern.” In 1908 Cubans who had fought against Spain formed an independent political party. They were massacred by the thousands by the Cuban government now more sensitive to pleasing Washington than to the voice of its own people.

The story of American intervention is the same everywhere. American intervention has never benefited any peoples except those allied with Washington and American corporations.

Hearst’s rival in yellow journalism was Joseph Pulitzer, whose name ended up on a prestigious journalism award. Today the entire US print and TV media engage in the yellow journalism of the Hearst/Pulitzer era. Yellow journalism has helped to keep America in wars as nonsensical as the Spanish-American war ever since the 21st century began. The neoconservatives have resurrected Lodge’s “Large Policy” of American imperialism justified by the doctrine of American exceptionalism.

If Americans were to read three history books, they could free themselves from their self-righteous delusions that endanger all life on earth. Those books are: A People’s History of The United Statesby Howard Zinn, The Untold History of the United States by Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick, and The War Lovers by Evan Thomas.

No one who reads one of these books will ever again believe that the US government in Washington is the “light unto the world,” the “exceptional and indispensable” government that brings “freedom and democracy” to the conquered provinces of the American Empire.

Washington is the home of warmongering self-interested parties that have no concept of compassion or justice and serve only their own power and enrichment. Americans are as indifferent to the populations that their government bombs as Teddy Roosevelt was to the prospect of his own country’s coastal cities being bombarded. As Russia’s President Putin reminded the world on March 18, 2014, the US prefers the rule of the gun to international law.

Ukraine Only Has Enough Gasoline For A Month

Nothing to see here, move along. While it appears the Russians are willing to pay the price of modest sanctions from the west to 'liberate' their fellow countrymen, the fallout from further tension with Ukraine could "boomerang" once again on the divided nation. As RBC Ukraine reports, the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Yuriy Prodan said at a press conference today that "oil reserves will last for 28-29 days" in Ukraine. After that, the negotiation begins as Ukraine already owes billions for previously delivered gas - as Ukraine's storage levels more than halved in the last 3 months.

Via RBC Ukraine,

Stocks of petroleum products in Ukraine will last for 28-29 days, said at today's press conference, the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Yuriy Prodan.

"Speaking on the situation with oil, then ensure there is quite stable. Today oil reserves will last for 28-29 days," - he said, the " RBC-Ukraine . "

At the same time, the Minister noted the significant risk reduction in the supply and rising gas prices. As of March 25, 2014 in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities located 7 billion cubic meters of gas.
"Up there can be about 2 billion is not the quantity that scares experts, it would be possible to hold only a week. It all depends on what kind of regime will be whether we can take about 20 million cubic meters. Meters of gas to reverse and so on "- said Prodan.

According to the company "Ukrtransgaz" abnormally warm winter 2013 2014. has reduced gas extraction from underground storage by an average of 37% compared to the same period last year: it was 60 million cubic meters per day.
In late December 2013. occupied at the time the post of Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Edward Stawicki reported that Ukrainian gas reserves in underground storage is 16.5 billion cubic meters.

We suspect any further military intervention will only crimp this supply even faster.

The World Is Mobilizing for War In Ukraine and Eastern Europe

ukraine rumors of warWars do not just happen by circumstance. It takes planning, training, positioning of assets, the building of alliances and coordination. This process is referred to as mobilization and a growing part of the world is participating in the coming conflict related to Putin’s intention to invade Ukraine.

Ukraine Moves to Counter Russian “War Games”

Ukraine is sending troops to its Eastern and Northern Borders. Troops have been digging in along the south Eastern Ukraine border with Russia. Ukrainian soldiers have increased their presence amid fears the Russian military is staging training exercises close to the border in the Donbass region as prelude to a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Euronews correspondent, Angelina Kariakina has reported that absolutely “No Russian troops or military hardware have been spotted here but the Ukrainian troops say they have prepared for any situation. These ditches have been created to deter any movement from the Russian side.” However, actions speak louder than words and Ukraine obviously believes the threat is imminent. See the news report here.

Don’t Tell US Senior Govt. Officials That the Ukraine Is Not To be Invaded by Putin

The House Intelligence Committee Chairman, Mike Rogers, stated on NBC’s Meet the Press, that the Ukrainians “passionately believe” that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will be on the move again in Ukraine, especially in the east and that the United States ought to provide weapons to the Ukrainian army so it could defend the country from a Russian invasion“. Rogers is not the only senior US government official who believes that Putin is going to make a move on Ukraine and possibly other countries as well. Last week, I reported that the Guardian’s Dan Roberts has extensively covered Biden’s promises of an increased US military presence in the Baltics made in Warsaw. The US is planning to send ground troops to the Baltic States according to this report. Biden stated that “We are exploring a number of additional steps to increase the pace and scope of our military co-operation, including rotating US forces to the Baltic region to conduct ground and naval exercises, as well as training missions”. The Eastern European Countries include Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Lithuanian, Latvia, and Finland and are the presumed targets of Putin. Reuters is also reporting that the Vice-President met in Warsaw with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik in order to reassure our support of his country. Also, readers may recall that I previously reported on a senior Russian advisor to the Russian Parliament, Roman Kokorev, and how he published this map, now scrubbed, detailing Putin’s plans to takeover Eastern Europe. Clearly, the Kokorev account is being validated by, first Mike Rogers, and then by Biden, as he previously stated that the US “is committed to NATO’S pledge to help member states if military action is taken against them”. Biden also addressed the issue that I had previously raised, in a previous article, in which Putin can strangle gas shipments to Europe. And even if Kokorev was a mythical character, which he is not, these same viewpoints are being expressed by major Russian government officials as reported yesterday by Reuters.

Is Putin Playing Hitler In Reverse?

Yesterday, Reuters was reporting  that deputy speaker at the Duma, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, whose party holds a minority in the parliament, has proposed dividing Ukraine along the lines of an infamous 1939 Nazi-Soviet pact and suggested that regions in Western Ukraine hold referendums on breaking away from Kiev. Zhirinovsky, whose nationalist Liberal Democratic party largely backs Russian President Putin, sent the letter as Russia annexed the Crimea region of southern Ukraine last week. Subsequently, in a letter sent to the governments of Poland, Romania and Hungary, Zhirinovsky also encouraged these same countries to hold referendums on incorporating the Ukrainian regions into their territory. Reuters observed that Zhirinovsky’s views resonate with much of the pro-national sentiment of the Russian people. Zhirinovsky letter, seen by Reuters, suggested  that Poland, Hungary and Romania, who are now in the European Union, might wish to take back regions of which they previously possessed. Here is another account of the same story.

China Lines Up With Russia vs. Ukraine

Russia is owed billions by Ukraine for already-delivered gas. Additionally, China is also owed $3 billion, by Ukraine, for loans made for future grain delivery to China. In 2012, The State Food and Grain Corporation and the Export-Import Bank of China agreed to provide Ukrainian corporation loans of $3 billion, which was planned to be on the spot and forward purchases of grain for future delivery to China. China is calling in this loan.
The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Igor Schweich, confirmed that China is indeed pursuing a lawsuit against Ukraine in a London court for the return of a loan of $3 billion. The Ukraine minister disagrees with China’s case, as Schweich emphatically states that China “filed false information that there are no claims to us from China…” False claims? Only three billion dollars? Three billion dollars sounds like mere chump change. Is this a pretext to join Russia in supporting the coming invasion of Ukraine?

NATO and the US Military Fears Russian Invasion of Ukraine and Eastern Europe

General Philip Breedlove, the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, stated this past Sunday that Russia is using snap military exercises in preparation of a military invasion of Ukraine. Breedlove describes the term snap military exercise in a recent account. “A snap exercise puts an incredible force at a border. The force that is at the Ukrainian border now to the east is very, very sizeable and very, very ready.” Breedlove notes that Russia has its military “postured on the eastern border of Ukraine to run to Trans-Dniester if the decision was made to do that, and that is very worrisome.” Trans-Dniester is a region on the border of Ukraine and neighboring Moldova. It has autonomous status and a large Russian majority. This would make this location the ideal situation for Putin to launch an invasion of Ukraine. Breedlove further states that it is impossible to defend against the coming Russian invasion without pre-positioning assets in the area, “especially in the Baltics and other places“. If this does not imply the General isn’t expecting an invasion of Eastern Europe, I do not know what would. Several Eastern European countries have requested protection from Putin.

The US Military Prepares for War in the Balkans

According to Yahoo News, the U.S. and Ukrainian troops will take part in military drills with about 700 soldiers from 10 other countries at a shooting range in central Bulgaria, as reported by the Defense Ministry. Clearly, our military leadership is preparing for war and is busily engaged in forming alliances as a preparation for war. Why is Obama intending to reduce our military levels to 1940 levels? Why are many of  our carrier strike forces presently rendered inactive? And let us not forget the open-mike comment made to the Russian about making military concessions before the 2012 election. Just whose team is Obama on? There are further domestic indications of what is coming in regard to Putin’s impending invasion of Ukraine and these factors will be presented and discussed in a later installment on this crisis.

I share with you my favorite Psalm
Psalm 15
King James Version (KJV)

1 Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?

2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.

4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

God Keep you all!!!

Tens of Thousands Sign Petition to Reunite Alaska With Russia

MOSCOW, March 25 (RIA Novosti) - Over 22,000 people have signed a petition calling for the secession of Alaska from the United States to seek reunification with Russia.

The petition, available on the White House website, opened on March 21. If the motion attracts 100,000 signatures within a month, the Obama administration is obliged to respond according to its guidelines.

The petition, entitled "Alaska Back to Russia," encourages a vote on secession, citing historic travels of Russian explorers to Alaska, as far back as the crossing of native Siberians across the Bering land bridge over 10 thousand years ago.

The document tracks the settlement of the region by Russians, including Aleuts colonizing the Aleutian Archipelago, and the expedition of famed explorer Mikhail Gvozdez who first sited Alaska in 1732.

Alaska was a Russian colony until 1867 when Russian Emperor Alexander II sold it to the US for $7.2 million -$120 million in today's money after being adjusted for inflation.

In November 2012, a similar petition sought Texas' withdrawal from the US following the state's dissatisfaction with federal economic policy.

Signatories of that petition called for Texas to declare independence in order to maintain a balanced budget and "to protect its citizens' standard of living."

Similar motions were filed by residents of several other American states, including Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

Yet only Texas garnered enough signatures - over 125,000 - to be reviewed by the Obama administration, which turned the petition down saying that while "no one disputes that our country faces big challenges," Americans needed to work together "to find the best way to move forward."

Despite the value of healthy debate, "we don't let that debate tear us apart," the White House said.

OK, fine, we’ll only keep your phone records for 18 months

If you have a problem with the NSA being able to look at your phone records, I wonder if it really matters to you what the time horizon is for them to hang onto the records. I’m guessing not much, but in his big announcement that he’s going to supposedly reform this system, that is what President Obama’s big change really amounts to. The Washington Post:

The White House proposal would end the government’s practice of sweeping up the phone records of millions of Americans and holding onto those records for five years so the numbers can be searched for national security purposes. Instead, the White House is expected to propose that the phone records be kept for 18 months, as the phone companies are already required to do by federal regulation, and that it be able to preserve its ability to see certain records in specific circumstances approved by a judge.

According to a senior administration official, the president will present “a sound approach to ensuring the government no longer collects or holds this data, but still ensures that the government has access to the information it needs to meet the national security needs his team has identified.” The administration official spoke late Monday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the proposal before it was officially announced.

The president’s plan, however, relies on Congress to pass legislation — something that has so far seemed unlikely.

I have to be honest here and tell you I’m not as incensed as many of you over the NSA’s ability to get this information. I have more concern over the trustworthiness of the Obama Administration to be responsible with the information, given its track record abusing the IRS, the NLRB and other arms of government to punish its political enemies. I think the ability to get the information is vital to national security, and that’s why we need to elect honest people who can be trusted to wield that power responsibly.

But those of you who are upset about the NSA, you tell me: Does this address your concerns?

Putin Next Move Restore Soviet Union?
