Scientists See Increased Asteroid Threat

Scientists see increased asteroid threat

WASHINGTON, November 8 (RIA Novosti) – Asteroid strikes like the one that occurred over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in February are much more likely to happen than previously thought, scientists said in a report published in the scientific journal Nature.

A team of researchers studied two decades’ worth of data gathered by US government-run infrasound sensors positioned around the planet and discovered that 60 asteroids up to 20 meters (65 feet) in size had crashed into the planet’s atmosphere over the period – far more than had been previously thought.

Now scientists suggest that asteroids like the Chelyabinsk one – which was about 19 meters (62 feet) wide – could strike the planet every 20 or even 10 years, compared with an earlier estimate of once a century, according to the report, published Wednesday.

Speaking to the BBC, lead author Professor Peter Brown, from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, said an asteroid-warning system should be established.

“Having some sort of system that scans the sky almost continuously and looks for these objects just before they hit the earth, that probably is something worth doing,” he said.

“In the case of Chelyabinsk, a few days’ to a week’s warning would have been valuable.”

The findings come amid rising concern that asteroids pose a danger to the planet.

Next month the United Nations General Assembly is expected to establish an International Asteroid Warning Network for countries to share information about falling celestial bodies. It is also anticipated to call on the world’s space agencies to establish an advisory group to explore technologies for deflecting an asteroid, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

In September, the United States and Russiasigned an agreement that listed several areas for potential nuclear-energy and security cooperation. The US Department of Energy subsequently noted “defense from asteroids” as one such area.

Scientists Develop Human Derived Gelatin

Yummy Yummy... taste like grandpa

Jell-O is having something of a moment right now. Between beautiful Jell-O videos and intense Jell-O mold competitions, this jiggly food is suddenly getting jiggy again. Now, we learn that Chinese researchers are developing human-derived gelatin. (Most gelatin-based desserts and food products are derived from cow and pig collagen.)

It's not quite as frightening as it sounds; the scientists inject human gelatin genes into a strain of yeast. Therefore, it isn't human bones and skin actually in the gelatin, like it is with animals, just a bit of DNA.

This human gelatin poses less risk of disease, is a bit more stable and is more consistent in quality.

For those that don't like the idea of animal bones and skin or human DNA in their food, there are substitutes. Agar-agar is a seaweed-based gel that is a bit firmer than animal-based gelatin. Carrageen, also known as Irish moss, can be used for softer gels or puddings. There are also many kosher and vegan gels, so everyone can keep calm and wobble on.

Cops Now Enforcing Anal Probing On Americans Routinely

Earlier this week we covered the story of an innocent New Mexico man who was forced to endure 14 hours of enforced anal probing at the hands of doctors, on the orders of cops looking for narcotics, and was then billed by the medical center. It has now emerged that this was not an isolated incident, and that ANOTHER person was treated the exact same way in the same medical center.

In October, Timothy Young was pulled over by cops in Lordsburg, N.M for not using his blinker. According to police reports, the same drug sniffing dog that featured in David Eckert’s ordeal, described above, again reacted in Mr Young’s case.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 reports that Young was immediately taken to the same hospital, the Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, and just like Eckert, was subjected to anal exams and x-rays of his stomach, without giving his consent.

The examinations again turned up nothing, and it again turned out that the “search warrant” obtained by the cops was issued in a different county to where the medical exams took place.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 also reports that the drug sniffing dog’s certification expired in 2011 and was never renewed. The law states that drug dogs must be re-certified every year.

“We have done public requests to find anything that would show this dog has been trained, we have evidence that this dog has had false alerts in the past,” David Eckert’s attorney Shannon Kennedy said.

The medical center faces the possibility of hefty fines, with the doctors in question scheduled to face the state licensing board, which may revoke their licenses to practice medicine.

The police officers involved in Young’s case will face a law enforcement disciplinary board, while in Eckert’s case all involved are staring a weighty lawsuit in the face.

This second case indicates that police are conducting this procedure as a matter of routine when a drug sniffing dog reacts to anyone they stop.

Indeed, we have covered several disturbing stories of innocent people being forced to undergo cavity searches at the hands of police who have no authority, flagrantly violating the Constitutional rights of Americans.

Iranian TV airs animated strike on Tel Aviv, Dimona

Iranian state television aired a computer-animated video that showed an imagined Iranian missile strike on Israeli cities including Tel Aviv and Dimona, malls and IDF bases.

The video was also posted online by the pro-regime website Iran’s View, which said Thursday the four-minute clip was part of an “hour long documentary [that] includes a video simulation of Iranian respond [sic] to an airstrike by Israel against Iran’s nuclear facilities.”

The video glamorizes such a strike, showing computer-generated video of Iranian missiles being pointed upward against a backdrop of scenic skies and swelling musical accompaniment.

In the animated video, the missiles launch toward Israel, where some are destroyed by Israeli ground-based anti-missile systems reminiscent of the IDF’s Iron Dome, Arrow and David’s Sling batteries. But Israeli systems, depicted as a translucent dome over Israel, fail to stop all the missiles. The video then depicts the missile’s-eye view, zooming in on targets throughout the country using footage that appears to have been gleaned off online video-sharing and mapping sites.

The targets include a few military and governmental sites, including IDF Headquarters in Tel Aviv’s Kirya military base, at least one airbase, the Dimona nuclear installation in the Negev, and others. But it also includes civilian targets, such as a bank in Tel Aviv’s Rothschild Boulevard, the iconic Azrieli Mall and Ben Gurion International Airport.

According to Iran’s View, the full documentary was “about Iran’s missile capabilities in confronting external threats and responding to any strikes against its soil.”

“In March 21 [sic],” at a speech in honor of the Persian new year, “Iran’s supreme leader ayatollah [sic] Khamenei said his country will destroy Israel [sic] cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa if attacked,” the website noted.
